Choosing a Puppy for Your Tennessee Home

Start with the weekday your puppy will share

Walk through an ordinary Tuesday before you plan the first weekend. Name the adult responsible when the first person leaves for work, during school pickup, after dinner and overnight. Include feeding instructions, toilet breaks, settling, gentle handling, grooming and veterinary appointments. A puppy’s care should not depend on everyone assuming someone else is available.

For example, a household might have an adult at home most days but no plan for the day that person attends an appointment. Solve that small gap now. A long commute, shared apartment entrance or changing shift schedule belongs in the discussion because it changes the care you can reliably provide. The same exercise works wherever in Tennessee you live.

Confirm housing permissions and the ongoing care budget, too. Ask how you will manage if a caregiver becomes ill or a workday runs late. A useful application describes the household you have, including its constraints, so the conversation can focus on an appropriate individual puppy.

Compare the individual Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo

Ask what Cassie has observed about the particular puppy: how it responds to handling, settles after activity and participates in its current care routine. Explain the people, other animals, visitors and everyday activity it would encounter in your home. Ask what remains uncertain rather than expecting a puppy’s future to be predictable.

Coat maintenance deserves its own conversation. Find out what the individual coat needs now and who will help you learn appropriate care. A breed preference is useful; a realistic household routine makes that preference more meaningful.

Ask for evidence and written terms you can understand

Review the puppy’s readable care history separately from screening information about its actual named parents. Ask which report belongs to which animal, when it was performed and what the result addresses. Read the written purchase terms before committing. Confirm the individual price, responsibilities, timing, supported handoff arrangements and what the terms say if plans change. Keep separate notes for purchase cost, travel costs if applicable, and ongoing care. The program process gives you a route into an owner-managed conversation.

One practical question is: “Can you help me connect this puppy’s care notes and its parents’ reports to the information in the written terms?” If something is unclear, request an explanation and a readable copy. Attractive presentation cannot answer that question for you.

Check Tennessee entry requirements before booking

Checked October 16, 2026: TDA’s import guidance requires a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for dogs entering Tennessee for more than 15 days, with ordinary validity of 30 days, and current rabies vaccination for dogs at 3 months of age. Since June 30, 2026, fillable-PDF electronic CVIs, including Kansas and Colorado PDFs, are no longer accepted as import CVIs. Have the veterinarian and TDA confirm the accepted format and requirements for the actual puppy, purpose and dates.

The renewed September 4 NWS order includes dogs. Outside an infested zone but within an infested state, it requires a prescribed CVI inspection statement and validity no longer than seven days from inspection. Its infested-zone branch uses five days from inspection, documented effective treatment, authorized oversight, specified treatment timing and wound-free conditions. It also requires prior permission and an entry permit approved within 48 hours before entry. The order expires December 4, 2026, unless extended or rescinded. Have the veterinarian and TDA determine the applicable origin, transit and entry requirements before booking; this guide does not establish a puppy’s eligibility.

Make a homecoming plan for your actual address

Ask Cassie which homecoming options can be supported for your situation. Name the receiving adult, agree on the handoff details and prepare the secure carrier setup appropriate to that puppy. Keep readable documents, food instructions and routine notes accessible throughout the journey.

Use TDOT SmartWay for current highway information before departure, and check access to the final receiving address separately. A highway map cannot tell you whether your building’s receiving arrangements or the last local road will work. Have a backup for a delay rather than letting a tight appointment determine the puppy’s care.
