Choosing a Puppy in Iowa: Fit, Records and Homecoming

Choosing a puppy in Iowa starts with your household’s daily routine, the seller’s records and a realistic arrival plan. A small companion still needs regular care, grooming and supervision, whether you live in a Des Moines apartment, a smaller town or on acreage.

Sage Puppies is Cassie Milar’s program in South Jordan, Utah, offering Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo puppies. Start with current puppy listings and Our Program, then discuss the individual puppy and your Iowa home with Cassie.

Sage’s general puppy purchase range is $3,500–$4,500. Each listing gives the puppy’s exact price; guardian arrangements and travel costs are separate. Review Pricing & Reservation and How It Works before committing.

Compare three breeds against your real day

Use our Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo pages to compare the breeds and check their current listings. Ask about the particular puppy’s activity, response to handling and experience with everyday household sounds. A breed name alone cannot establish how that puppy will fit your family.

  • Write down who handles meals, toileting and company during work, school or farm chores.
  • Discuss coat care and grooming arrangements, including the time and ongoing expense your household can manage.
  • Describe children, resident pets, stairs, shared entrances and your actual outdoor space.
  • Ask how the puppy responds to new experiences and what the seller has directly observed.

For an acreage household, the rural Iowa companion guide helps you assess boundaries, supervision and storm preparation. A large property does not replace daily care.

Ask for records before making a commitment

Confirm the seller’s identity, location and connection to the actual puppy. Request a live conversation and current puppy information. Ask which veterinary care records will accompany the puppy and which parent health results can be reviewed. A puppy examination, parent screening result and written purchase agreement answer different questions.

Read the actual contract and reservation terms. Clarify the puppy’s price, any separate travel charge, what happens if plans change and whom to contact after homecoming. Ask for the exact documents and support offered rather than assuming a package from a general article.

Check Iowa entry documents for the actual trip

If your puppy is coming from another state, Iowa Administrative Code 21—65.10 generally requires a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, with limited exceptions for exhibition and performing dogs. Dogs four months of age and older must have a current USDA-approved rabies vaccination; dogs originating from rabies-quarantined areas cannot enter under this rule.

The Iowa agriculture department’s FAQ states that a CVI is valid for 30 days from inspection. Have the veterinary team confirm current requirements for your puppy’s age, origin and planned arrival date. A vaccination record alone does not replace the required travel certificate.

Before buying travel, confirm the feasible arrangement with Cassie: who accompanies the puppy, where the handoff occurs, which documents are provided and what happens if timing changes. Read How It Works alongside your specific plan.

Set up the homecoming routine before arrival

Choose a quiet indoor rest area and a manageable toileting route. Check rental or association rules if they apply, and decide how your household will handle shared doors, children and other pets. Arrange a local veterinary appointment and verify the clinic’s after-hours instructions.

The National Weather Service’s Des Moines family preparation guide includes pets in emergency planning: food, water, medications, veterinary records, identification and backup care. Keep that kit accessible and include the puppy’s current care instructions.

Use the Iowa feeding handover guide to collect the exact food, amounts and meal times before arrival. Assign a primary caregiver and a backup so a delayed commute or changed chore schedule does not leave care uncovered.

Your next steps

  • Review the currently listed puppy and confirm the individual fit with Cassie.
  • Read the price, reservation terms and actual agreement.
  • Confirm travel feasibility and age-appropriate Iowa documentation before committing to transport.
  • Prepare the home, caregiver schedule and local veterinary appointment.
