A useful West Virginia puppy search brings together household fit, clear records and a realistic homecoming plan. Start with the care your family can provide, then compare the individual puppy and the information behind the listing.

Begin with the care your household can provide
Map a normal workday: who handles meals, bathroom trips, supervision and quiet rest? Identify an adult who can help if a shift runs late or the main caregiver is unavailable. A fenced yard and working from home can help with logistics, but daily care still needs someone’s attention.
Walk the route from the sleeping area to the bathroom area. A Charleston apartment, a Morgantown townhome and a rural property may involve different doors, stairs and outdoor access. These are planning examples; the details of your own home matter. Check housing permission, secure gates and a quiet retreat before deciding on a puppy.
Compare Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo through the individual puppy
Use Sage’s existing Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo guides to compare breed background and care. These resources serve local and national families from Utah. Havanese is a breed; Havapoo and Cavapoo describe crosses with Havanese–Poodle and Cavalier–Poodle ancestry respectively.
Ask about the actual parents, the basis for an adult-size estimate and the puppy’s coat-care needs. Request recent observations of handling, exploration and settling after activity. What has the puppy experienced, and what remains unfamiliar? Size, coat, shedding, activity and behavior can vary. The label alone does not guarantee allergy compatibility or a particular temperament.
Read records and written terms before committing
Match the puppy’s date of birth and identifying details across dated examination and care records. Ask which parent health reports apply to the pairing and request the actual results. Sage’s health-testing information describes the program’s approach; it does not establish that every possible test was performed on every dog. Your veterinarian can help interpret relevant findings.
Read the purchase and reservation terms before making a commitment. Clarify payment timing, changes, refunds, any stated coverage and each party’s travel responsibilities. Keep a copy of what you reviewed. A friendly conversation helps you ask questions, while the written agreement records the terms you need to understand.
Confirm West Virginia arrival requirements before booking
WVDA’s current movement-requirements page links its ordinary import guidance and a separate New World Screwworm movement notice. The dog-and-cat guidance calls for a veterinary inspection certificate; the notice adds origin-dependent inspection, permit and document-timing requirements. A general document window is not enough to establish a particular trip’s eligibility.
Before booking, have the accredited issuing veterinarian and WVDA confirm the requirements for the actual puppy’s age, origin, transit and entry date, including accepted document format and timing. Confirm carrier requirements separately. A care record or tentative date does not establish travel readiness, carrier acceptance or permission to enter.
Plan the last part of the journey and backup care
WVDOT’s road-conditions resource links to WV511 for current incidents, construction, weather and cameras. Use the relevant information for your actual journey, then confirm local-road and driveway access with the receiving parties. Agree which adult receives the puppy and who communicates if plans change. Discuss supported options through delivery and pickup.
ReadyWV’s hazards resource covers preparation for floods, power outages, severe weather and other disruptions; it is not a current warning for your address. The state’s pet-preparedness guidance recommends a pet kit and backup caregiver. Confirm pet-accepting accommodation if your plan depends on it, because public shelters may not accept animals.
Bring practical questions to the next conversation
Use the West Virginia budget guide to plan purchase, homecoming and care costs, including questions for the county assessor about registration. Bring your care schedule, puppy preferences and unanswered records or travel questions to the discussion with Cassie.
Read how the process works and apply when ready for owner-managed next steps. Questions can be clarified beforehand. Applying does not guarantee approval, availability or a reservation. The state directory provides related resources if your plans involve another state.
