Ohio Puppy Buyer Guide: Health Records and Next Steps

Before choosing a puppy for an Ohio home, connect the individual puppy to its records, the seller and the receiving-care plan. Ask for readable information, resolve discrepancies with the issuer and write down the questions that need answers before paying.

Start with current puppies, price and the purchase process

Sage’s general puppy purchase range is $3,500–$4,500. Confirm the particular puppy’s price with Cassie. Travel, ongoing care and guardian arrangements are separate. Read Pricing & Reservation and How It Works before committing.

The live listings below can change. Open the puppy’s profile and ask about its status, records and possible fit. If your preferred breed has no current listings, discuss future plans; an application does not reserve a puppy or establish a travel date.

Match the puppy to the examination and care records

Request the birth date, sex, description and supplied identification. Match those details across the profile, examination, care history and written agreement. If a microchip number is supplied, ask how it is verified and registered. Do not assume every document uses the same nickname or that an unexplained mismatch is harmless.

Ask for the examination date, issuer, findings, disclosed concerns and any follow-up advice. Review vaccination and treatment names and dates with the receiving veterinarian, including what remains due. A clinic name or a vaccine sticker alone does not prove the complete history. Request clarification from the issuer when an entry is missing or unclear rather than diagnosing the puppy from a screenshot.

Keep parent screening separate from the puppy’s exam

Ask which reports exist for the named parents, how each report identifies that dog and what the test addresses. Read Health Testing before discussing the actual evidence with Cassie. A puppy examination, a parent DNA result and a breed-specific screening are different records.

OFA explains that a CHIC number indicates the required breed-specific tests were performed and their results made public; it does not mean all results were normal. Read the actual findings and dates. Do not treat a health-tested phrase, registry entry or guarantee headline as proof that a puppy will never develop a health problem.

Use Ohio rules for the actual seller and journey

Ohio’s recordkeeping rule for high-volume breeders and licensed brokers includes identification and movement records for those regulated categories. Ask what seller category applies and what documents are available. This Ohio rule does not itself establish that every seller, or Sage’s Utah program, belongs to that category.

As checked October 15, 2026, Ohio’s dog-entry rule, effective September 11, 2026, requires dogs entering the state to be at least eight weeks old and accompanied by an interstate certificate of veterinary inspection. Dogs twelve weeks or older require rabies vaccination; vaccinated dogs need the specified current rabies certificate. A narrow nursing-puppy transit exception is not a general young-puppy delivery permission.

The general entry rule addresses disease exposure, quarantined origins and document submission and validity. It requires a certificate copy to reach the department within seven days of issuance and generally voids the certificate thirty days after inspection and issuance, subject to its stated permissions. The issuing veterinarian and Ohio Department of Agriculture should confirm the actual origin, age, purpose and travel date, including current restrictions and the accepted certificate method. Retail-transport law also has conditions for the covered transactions; do not apply a transit exception to an Ohio homecoming.

The department’s CVI page describes its electronic transition, including a January 1, 2027 requirement for electronic import and export certificates. Confirm the method accepted for your actual journey; an ordinary emailed or fillable PDF is not automatically an approved electronic certificate.

Arrange receiving care and county registration

Choose a receiving veterinary practice, confirm an appointment and keep the supplied records accessible. Follow the purchase agreement’s examination terms and veterinary advice. Ask who to contact if the puppy becomes unwell or the travel timing changes. Receiving care is a separate responsibility from the breeder’s examination and travel paperwork.

Ohio dog registration is administered through the county auditor. The current registration section is 955.02, renumbered in March 2026, and addresses dogs more than three months old. Section 955.06 contains partial-year provisions, including certain puppies and out-of-state purchases after July 1. Ask the auditor about the deadline and fee for this puppy and acquisition date instead of relying on an old section number or a single statewide fee.

Choose the household fit and responsible next step
