Bringing a Puppy Home to California: A First-Week Checklist

View Available Puppies

A good first week begins before your puppy arrives: agree on a potty route, set up a quiet resting space, confirm the food and care routine, and choose the adults who will handle each part of the day. Your California address helps plan the journey; your actual home, weather and schedule shape the routine.

Sage Puppies raises Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo puppies in South Jordan, Utah. California families can discuss a coordinated delivery arrangement or an appointment for pickup in Utah. Confirm the individual puppy’s readiness, timing and handoff before booking travel. Our California delivery and pickup comparison covers that decision.

Before arrival: walk through a normal day

Decide who will cover morning potty trips, meals, midday care and the evening routine. Arrange time at home for the adjustment period. Keep a small puppy area with a bed or crate, water, suitable toys and easy-to-clean flooring close to the family’s everyday living space. Secure cords, cleaning products and small objects before the first evening.

Ask Cassie for this puppy’s current food, feeding routine, familiar cues and relevant records. Have those instructions available to every caregiver. Choose a local veterinarian and an emergency veterinary contact in advance, and arrange the first appointment around the puppy’s records and go-home plan.

Apartment or condo: plan the whole potty route

In a Los Angeles apartment, a San Diego condo or a Bay Area building, a potty trip may involve a hallway, elevator and shared outdoor area. Walk that route before arrival. Check your actual lease or community rules, how access works after dark, and who can help if the lift or usual exit is unavailable. A small dog still needs a workable daily routine.

Ask your veterinarian which outdoor areas and puppy activities suit the vaccination stage and local conditions. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s puppy socialization guidance supports safe, positive early experiences. Plan brief, comfortable introductions to household sounds and routines with professional guidance; busy communal spaces need their own plan.

Coastal or inland: use the weather at your doorstep

A cool coastal morning and a hot inland afternoon can require different schedules. Before each outing, check the actual weather, the route and the walking surface. In hotter Sacramento, Central Valley or Inland Empire conditions, plan short outdoor breaks during cooler periods and make room for indoor play and rest.

The AVMA’s warm-weather pet guidance recommends avoiding exercise during the hottest part of the day. Shade and fresh water belong in the plan. Ask your veterinarian how to adapt activity for your puppy. A nearby beach or hiking trail can be a future outing once access, conditions and your puppy’s needs support it.

Arrival day: make the handoff unhurried

Have an adult available for the confirmed arrival window. Keep the carrier, food instructions and records together, and ask any final care questions at the handoff. At home, introduce the resting area and agreed potty route, then give the puppy time to settle. Keep greetings gentle and supervise children’s interactions.

If you collect your puppy in Utah, include the return trip in your first-day plan. A long drive or flight can leave less time for household introductions. Prepare the home before leaving and keep the arrival evening flexible.

Days two through seven: learn this puppy’s rhythm

Keep notes on meals, potty trips, rest and the activities your puppy enjoys. Share them with caregivers so the routine stays consistent. Build short, reward-based practice into ordinary moments, and keep new experiences manageable for the individual puppy. Tell your veterinarian about health concerns and contact Cassie with questions about the puppy’s established routine.

Plan coat care around the puppy you bring home. Set aside time for gentle handling and ask about brushes, combing and professional grooming. Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo coats have different tendencies, and the individual coat still matters. Our California small-breed comparison helps connect grooming and companionship needs with your household.

Add your puppy to the household evacuation plan

California’s CDFA pet evacuation-kit checklist is a useful reference. Assemble a portable carrier, leash or harness, identification, records, familiar items, sanitation supplies, food and water. The checklist recommends at least seven days of food and water and making carriers familiar before an emergency.

Tell household members where the kit is kept, choose who will collect the puppy if you are away, and identify a destination that can accommodate your pet. Review your county’s alert options and keep contact information current as you bring a new puppy into the family.

Keep the purchase and travel plan clear

Sage Puppies’ owner-approved general purchase range is $3,500–$4,500. Check the exact puppy profile and Pricing & Reservation for the individual price and terms. Delivery or your own travel is a separate part of the budget, along with grooming, supplies, training and veterinary care. Guardian-home opportunities have separate eligibility and arrangements.

For an ownership transfer into California, review the current CDFA dog health-certificate instructions with Sage Puppies and the veterinarian coordinating the trip. Confirm which requirements apply to the puppy and travel arrangement. The delivery comparison explains the questions to settle before departure.
