Puppy Gates: Measure the Opening Before You Buy
Choose a puppy gate by the actual opening and the puppy who will use it. The useful gate is one you can install correctly, pass through easily and check each day. A broad width label can hide a gap in the sizes a model supports, so measure before ordering. See the researched product options.

Make a doorway worksheet
Measure between the mounting surfaces at the points the instructions specify. Note skirting boards, trim, an uneven floor and any threshold that might interfere with the base. Write down both the narrowest usable width and the mounting arrangement the manufacturer permits.
Add the height, the adult walk-through width and the direction you need the door to open. A gate that fits the walls may still leave an awkward route when you are carrying laundry. Check the latch from each side rather than planning to step over it.
Finally, look at every opening a small puppy might reach. A cat door is convenient in some households, but it is an escape route for a puppy small enough to use it. A tall frame cannot compensate for unsuitable bar spacing.

Carlson Extra Wide Walk-Thru Gate, Black, 30-inch
Why consider it: A walk-through door can give adults easier access than stepping over a barrier.
Before you buy: It fits 29–32-inch openings without the extension or 34–36.5 with it, leaving a 32–34-inch gap in supported sizes. Keep the small pet door closed; check bar gaps and puppy behavior. This pressure-mounted model is not for the top of stairs.
A width label is not a continuous fit range
The selected Carlson Extra Wide model illustrates why the detailed chart matters. It fits 29–32-inch openings without its extension and 34–36.5 inches with the supplied 4-inch extension. The maker explicitly excludes openings between 32 and 34 inches.
If your opening is 33 inches, do not order this model on the strength of the headline range. Choose another model with that width expressly supported. Do not improvise spacers or combine extensions the instructions do not permit.
A gate or a pen?
Doorway: A correctly installed walk-through gate can separate two rooms while keeping adult access convenient.
Open room: A pen creates its own footprint; it may be easier to position when there is no suitable doorway.
Stair top: The pressure-mounted gate featured here is not the option to use. Choose equipment specifically designed for the location and follow its installation instructions.
Inspect after installation
Follow the exact manual, including its wall cups and mounting hardware. Check the latch, contact points and any small pet door. Keep that door closed when it is part of the puppy’s boundary.
Start with supervision and watch for squeezing, climbing or moving the frame. Recheck as your puppy grows. If the puppy can defeat the setup, replace the arrangement instead of treating the published height as a guarantee.
For the space inside the boundary, use Indoor Puppy Playpens and Crate vs. Playpen.
