Puppy Raincoat Size Guide: Measure Chest, Back and Movement

A puppy raincoat is a measured-fit purchase. Start with chest girth, back length and the exact model’s chart, then check movement and bathroom access. A small size label or a future adult weight cannot tell you whether a coat fits your puppy today.

Record three fit checks before ordering

  • Chest: measure around the widest ribcage using the maker’s method. Date the measurement: ____.
  • Back: record the measurement the chart requests. Distinguish a body-fitting range from the actual garment length.
  • Movement: check shoulder and front-leg clearance when the puppy stands, walks, sits and turns naturally.

Record neck-opening requirements too. Compare all relevant numbers instead of treating a chest match as complete proof of fit. If a measurement is outside the chart or the proportions are uncertain, ask the maker before ordering rather than selecting the nearest size name.

Check practical coverage

Look at where the hem and fasteners will sit. Leave appropriate bathroom access and check that the coat does not bunch under the front legs. If a harness will be underneath, verify that its attachment point can be reached through the particular coat’s opening.

Compare the vest version with a coverall only as separate products. Extra leg coverage changes the fitting questions and the handling routine. A size chart from one version should not be silently applied to another.

Ruffwear Sun Shower vest — Midnight Blue, XX-Small

The researched link selects the XX-Small vest raincoat in Midnight Blue, not the Sun Shower Coverall. The current maker’s chart lists 13–17 inches of chest girth and a 12–16-inch back measurement range. Its actual garment length is 13 inches; these are different measurements.

Tradeoffs: XXS is not automatically suitable for every Havanese, Havapoo or Cavapoo puppy. This is an uninsulated rain layer, not a warmth guarantee. Check the exact model’s chart, fasteners and harness portal. Sage has not documented a hands-on fit or weather trial.

Use this fit worksheet when the coat arrives

  • Chest fits the exact model’s chart: yes / no.
  • Back coverage matches the intended fit: yes / no.
  • Neck opening and fasteners sit comfortably: yes / no.
  • Walking, sitting and turning stay unimpeded: yes / no.
  • Bathroom and harness access work: yes / no.

Introduce the garment briefly while supervised. Pause if the puppy freezes, backs away or repeatedly tries to remove it; buying a coat is not evidence that the puppy is ready to wear one comfortably. Do not leave damaged fasteners or loose parts in use.

Follow the supplied care label. Ruffwear’s current Sun Shower instructions list secured fasteners, cold gentle-cycle washing with mild detergent and hanging to dry. Check the garment you actually receive, especially if a retailer is selling an older version.

Quick questions

Does XXS mean it fits a very young puppy? No. Compare the current chest and back measurements with the chart; some puppies are below its minimum.

Is the 13-inch length the same as the 12–16-inch back range? No. One is a garment dimension, while the other is the manufacturer’s fitting range.

Can a raincoat replace a warm coat? This example is an uninsulated rain layer. Do not infer cold-weather warmth from a raincoat label.
