# Preparing Your Tennessee Home for a New Puppy

Before a new puppy reaches your Tennessee home, turn the household’s good intentions into a plan people can follow. A named caregiver, a workable doorway routine and an organized receiving file can make the first days easier to manage.

Sage Puppies is Cassie Milar’s South Jordan, Utah program offering Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo puppies. Check [current listings](https://sagepuppies.com/available-puppies/)
 and [pricing and reservation information](https://sagepuppies.com/pricing-reservation/)
. General puppy purchase pricing is $3,500–$4,500; the individual price, timing and any supported travel arrangements need confirmation with Cassie.

## Rehearse one ordinary workday before arrival

Write the household schedule on one page. Assign an adult to morning care, daytime help, feeding instructions, rest, evening care and overnight needs. Add a backup for the day someone is ill, delayed or away. Children can participate with supervision, while an adult remains responsible for making the plan happen.

Then rehearse a practical interruption. If a meeting runs late, who receives the message and takes over? If a school event changes the evening, who protects the puppy’s rest space and routine? Agree on those decisions before the first busy day arrives.

Use the [Tennessee buyer guide](https://sagepuppies.com/puppies-for-sale-in-tennessee-find-a-breeder-you-can-trust/)
for initial fit and entry questions. Here, the useful result is a duty plan that reflects the people actually available. Ask Cassie about the puppy’s current routine and discuss any gaps instead of assuming a universal schedule for time alone.

## Set up the doorway, rest space and indoor routine

Walk from the receiving point to the puppy’s prepared space. In an apartment, inspect the shared corridor or elevator sequence. In a house, consider every exit a visitor or child might open. Decide how you will keep doors controlled and the puppy supervised while people carry supplies inside.

Prepare a quiet rest area, accessible cleaning supplies and a protected space without loose cords or reachable household chemicals. Agree on how children and other pets will be supervised. A calm introduction is easier when the adults have already decided who does what.

Check the practical route to the receiving veterinarian, too. Ask that veterinarian about appropriate public-ground exposure for the puppy’s actual situation. A common pet area or convenient walking route may need a different plan during the early days; settle that question with the clinician before relying on it.

## Decide who will maintain the coat

Ask about the individual coat and the care it currently receives. Choose the adult who will learn gentle handling and maintain the routine. If you plan to use a groomer, discuss whether that provider can meet the puppy’s needs and what information they want from you before an appointment.

Budget the time involved as well as the appointment cost. Keep the agreed supplies organized where the responsible adult can use them safely. Ask for a demonstration or explanation if a technique is unfamiliar rather than improvising around a tangle or a puppy’s discomfort.

Prepare quiet indoor activities and rest options for days when outdoor plans change. A simple household plan might rotate supervised play, handling practice and settling rather than trying to replace every canceled outing with more activity. Ask about suitable activities for your puppy and adjust to its response.

## Check the rules for your home address

The [Nashville/Davidson County licensing page](https://www.nashville.gov/departments/health/animal-care-and-control/licensing)
, checked October 16, 2026, says dogs and cats six months or older must be rabies-vaccinated and registered. Current vaccination documentation is needed. Consult that page for current fees and registration details if your address is in its jurisdiction.

That local registration threshold is separate from Tennessee’s state dog-import vaccination threshold at three months. Follow the veterinarian’s vaccination plan; do not treat a later registration threshold as permission to delay care. The [buyer guide’s Tennessee entry section](https://sagepuppies.com/puppies-for-sale-in-tennessee-find-a-breeder-you-can-trust/)
 covers the distinct movement questions.

For another Tennessee address, ask the relevant local authority and check your housing agreement. Write down which office applies to the actual home, what documentation it needs and when you will follow up. A Davidson County rule should not be carried over to another county by assumption.

## Pack a practical pet emergency kit

[TEMA’s pet-preparedness resource](https://www.tn.gov/tema/news-info/the-pit/2025/6/16/is-your-pet-ready-for-an-emergency.html)
recommends at least three days of food and water, medicines and records, identification and a recent photo, restraint and a carrier, sanitation supplies and familiar comfort items. It also recommends a pet-inclusive evacuation plan, current local alerts and gradual carrier practice. Confirm that a proposed backup destination can actually accommodate your animal.

Make the kit usable for your household: label a portable container, keep copies of the relevant records accessible and name the adult who will bring it. Put the backup caregiver’s contact details where every responsible adult can find them. Review the contents when the puppy’s food instructions, medicines or contact information change.

## Write a receiving and first-week handoff

Complete a short receiving sheet with the adult’s name, the actual agreed handoff, readable records, food and routine notes, veterinary contacts and the plan if timing changes. Share it with the backup adult. It should answer “who is doing this?” without needing another household discussion.

For the first week, record questions that arise instead of having different caregivers make conflicting changes. Ask the receiving veterinarian about follow-up timing and urgent concerns; coordinate program questions with Cassie. Recheck eligibility and the supported arrangements before making travel commitments.

Review [how the program works](https://sagepuppies.com/our-program/how-it-works/)
 and use the [application](https://sagepuppies.com/application/)
when ready for that conversation. The companion [rescue-report evaluation guide](https://sagepuppies.com/tennessee-puppy-rescue-investigation-raises-questions-for-buyers/)
can help you organize evidence questions. The goal is a prepared household with a clear, workable handoff for the particular puppy.
