# Your Puppy’s First Week in a Kentucky Home

Prepare the first week around your actual Kentucky home, the individual puppy’s current routine and your veterinarian’s guidance. Start with a manageable rest area, a supervised potty route and clear handover notes. For a Sage puppy, agree on the journey from Cassie Milar’s South Jordan, Utah program before scheduling the homecoming.

Sage’s general puppy purchase range is **$3,500–$4,500**. Confirm the puppy’s exact price with Cassie; guardian arrangements and travel costs are separate. Review [Pricing & Reservation](https://sagepuppies.com/pricing-reservation/)
 and [How It Works](https://sagepuppies.com/our-program/how-it-works/)
 before committing.

## Organize the handover before arrival

Ask Cassie to confirm the food currently used, meal amounts and times, care records, identification and any puppy-specific instructions. Put the information in one folder. Book the first veterinary appointment with your chosen clinic and confirm timing against the actual agreement; do not assume a universal examination deadline or standard packet contents.

If the puppy crosses into Kentucky, confirm the accredited veterinarian’s document plan and the current entry requirements described in our [Kentucky buyer guide](https://sagepuppies.com/puppies-for-sale-in-kentucky-a-complete-buyers-guide/)
. Agree on who remains responsible at each stage of the proposed handover.

## Make the rest area and potty route workable

In a shared building, practise the route through doors, stairs or an elevator before the puppy arrives. Find out which outdoor areas are permitted for pets. Keep supplies ready so the trip is manageable when you are tired or the weather changes.

For a fenced Lexington yard or a rural home, check gaps, gate latches, hazards and access to roads, vehicles or livestock. Choose a supervised potty spot appropriate to your veterinarian’s disease-risk advice. A large yard is not a substitute for supervision. Indoors, remove reachable cords and small objects and keep the rest area away from busy entrances.

## Use a rhythm you can adjust

Agree on which adult handles meals, potty opportunities, rest and brief play. Offer frequent supervised potty trips around waking, meals and activity, then adjust to the puppy’s actual needs. Reward success promptly and clean accidents calmly. Avoid setting a fixed bladder-holding time or expecting the puppy to sleep through the night by a particular day.

Keep introductions short and allow retreat. Supervise children and resident pets, and protect undisturbed rest. If the puppy becomes uncomfortable, create more distance or stop. The [AVSAB humane-training guidance](https://avsab.org/resources/position-statements/)
recommends reward-based methods; this is a professional source, not a Sage training credential.

## Put local dates on your calendar

If you live in Fayette County, [Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control](https://lfacc.org/licensing/)
lists annual dog licensing starting at six months, rabies vaccination at four months and vaccination proof for the licence. Ask your veterinarian how the puppy’s age and actual records fit those requirements.

For Louisville or any other Kentucky address, check the current local authority’s licensing, vaccination and restraint guidance separately. Confirm landlord or association permissions and keep the relevant records accessible. Fayette guidance is a local example, not a statewide licence schedule.

## Choose early experiences more carefully than outings

Lexington’s [dog-park page](https://www.lexingtonky.gov/playing/parks-natural-areas/dog-parks)
has location information, rules and temporary area closures. Recheck it when planning a future visit. Access to a public dog park does not establish that a young puppy is ready for it. Its posted rules call for proof of appropriate licensing and vaccinations, leashing at entry and exit, and continuous owner supervision.

The [AVSAB socialization statement](https://avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Puppy-Socialization-Position-Statement-FINAL.pdf)
supports safe early positive experiences before full vaccination and advises avoiding unsanitized, busy dog areas with unknown health and vaccination status. Ask your veterinarian which environments and contacts are appropriate for this puppy.

At home, introduce a quiet household sound or brief gentle handling at a comfortable pace and pair it with something pleasant. Allow choice and stop when needed. Socialization is not forcing a frightened puppy into greetings.

## Keep observations for your veterinarian

Record meals, appetite, potty patterns and changes in activity. Take the care documents to the appointment and ask about vaccinations, parasite prevention, feeding and any handling or grooming concerns. Contact the clinic promptly about concerning changes or illness rather than trying to diagnose them from a checklist.

## Check the first week’s foundations

- Handover details, current food and actual records are organized.
- The veterinary appointment and applicable local dates are agreed.
- Rest, supervision and the permitted potty route fit the home.
- New experiences are brief, positive and guided by the puppy’s response.

 and [How It Works](https://sagepuppies.com/our-program/how-it-works/)
when you are ready to discuss a placement.
