Independently find the business’s official contact route. Ask who raises the puppy and whether you are speaking with that person, a dealer or someone arranging a placement. In its [pet-scam guidance](https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/News_Media/ScammersTargetUnsuspectingPetSeekers.aspx) , Wisconsin DATCP recommends verifying the business and independently finding a veterinarian’s public contact number. If you need to confirm a veterinary document, contact the clinic through that public route and ask what it can appropriately verify. A seller-supplied phone number alone does not establish the clinic’s identity. ## Check licensing against the actual operation Use [DATCP’s current licensing categories](https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/dogbreederssellerslaw.aspx) , rather than assuming every seller has the same requirement. The categories include out-of-state dealers importing 25 or more dogs into Wisconsin per licensing year, regardless of whether they bred and raised them.
