# How to Spot a Responsible Puppy Breeder in the West

> **Quick Summary:** Choose a breeder through evidence you can check: identities and records for the puppy and parents, an honest explanation of care, clear written terms and practical communication. OFA can help verify submitted results, but a CHIC number is not an all-normal certificate and not every record appears there. Confirm visits, guarantees and transport individually rather than assuming any program offers them.

Illustrative scene; not a Sage facility, litter or health-screening demonstration.

A polished website and a Western address do not establish how a puppy was raised. This guide helps families compare evidence without presenting an invented personal buying story or treating one marketing checklist as proof of health. Sage Puppies is based in South Jordan, Utah and offers Havanese, Havapoo and Cavapoo puppies.

## Verify relevant parent screening and the puppy’s records

Ask for each parent’s identity, the actual tests, results, dates, age at testing and evaluator. A puppy examination, a DNA panel and a parent’s clinical screening answer different questions. None guarantees future health.

The [Havanese Club of America currently lists hips, patellas and annual eye examinations for Havanese CHIC](https://havaneseclubofamerica.org/health-issues-and-testing/)
. Crosses require a plan appropriate to both parent breeds and Poodle variety, not a universal patella–heart–eye package.

Where results were submitted, use [OFA and CHIC](https://ofa.org/chic-programs/)
to check identity and the actual findings. CHIC reflects required testing and disclosure, not necessarily normal results. Ask for original laboratory or clinical records when appropriate; absence from one public database alone does not establish that no test occurred.

## Understand experience and care without inventing a pedigree

Ask about practical experience, veterinary relationships, training approach and what the breeder can demonstrate. A new program is not automatically unreliable, and an established one still needs current evidence.

Cassie Milar founded Sage Puppies in 2025. Ask Cassie directly about experience relevant to a particular pairing; this article does not establish named mentors, credentials or first-hand trials.

Look for consistent identities, location and puppy history across records and live communication. Search independent reviews thoughtfully, allowing for privacy and consent when requesting references. An attractive photograph is not proof of the pictured animal’s identity.

## Arrange proportionate verification of the puppies and dam

Ask where the litter is cared for and how the breeder can show ordinary care. An agreed visit or live call can be useful, but health, biosecurity and household privacy may limit access. Clarify a restriction and request a reasonable alternative rather than declaring any visit ban proof of fraud.

Ask about the dam’s identity, care and relationship to this litter. Do not insist on handling a nursing dog or judging her future puppies by one encounter with a stranger. Guardian-home arrangements need an honest explanation, not disclosure of another household’s private details.

Discuss the puppy’s daily routines, handling and social experience. Observation can prompt questions; it cannot diagnose illness or predict temperament. Have a veterinarian interpret health concerns.

## Read the actual agreement before paying

Check the puppy’s identity, price, what is included, payment schedule, deposit treatment and agreed handoff. Read any health terms, claim procedure, examination deadline and return or rehoming arrangements exactly as written.

Do not assume every contract provides a one-year guarantee, a 72-hour examination window or lifetime take-back. Ask about limits and remedies. Contract terms and applicable protections vary; seek appropriate advice on an unresolved legal question.

Sage’s [pricing and reservation information](https://sagepuppies.com/pricing-reservation/)
is a starting point, not a substitute for the puppy-specific written agreement. Sage’s general puppy purchase range is $3,500–$4,500; that is not a market average or proof of another seller’s quality.

## Confirm Western travel and make an unhurried decision

Check the actual [pickup and delivery arrangements](https://sagepuppies.com/delivery-pickup/)
, caregiver, route and documents. Road and air options carry different risks; neither is automatically safest. Ask your veterinarian and the actual carrier about age, health, destination and weather requirements.

Request a complete written quote and contingency plan. Do not assume a Western trip is a short drive or that a single federal minimum covers every personal or commercial journey. Arrange transportation for the specific puppy, carrier and destination.

Payment pressure, identities that do not match, refusal to provide any verifiable information or unexplained extra charges are reasons to stop and investigate. The [FTC’s pet-scam guidance](https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2024/12/getting-pet-avoid-scams)
 is a useful additional check.

For a Sage inquiry, review [current availability](https://sagepuppies.com/available-puppies/)
, then use [the application](https://sagepuppies.com/application/)
to describe the household. Ask what is documented for the actual puppy rather than assuming this guide certifies every litter.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does CHIC mean every result was normal?

No. Read the actual results and dates, not only the CHIC number.

### Must every health record be in OFA?

No. Public listings can help, but verify appropriate original laboratory and clinical documents too.

### Is refusal of an unrestricted home visit proof of a scam?

No. Ask for the reason and a reasonable verification alternative. Evaluate the entire evidence trail.

### Can a breeder promise lifetime health?

Screening and a written remedy are different from a guarantee that no illness will occur.

### Is a high price proof of responsible breeding?

No. Judge records, care, communication and terms independently of the price.

### What transport method should I choose?

Compare the specific puppy, medical advice, caregiver, route, weather and carrier requirements.
